Center for Lake Erie Education and Research

The Center for Lake Erie Education and Research (CLEER) provides visitors with interactive experiences and hands-on learning opportunities related to the ecology of Lake Erie and all the Great Lakes, as well as understanding their role within Earth System Science as a whole.

The interactive exhibit space of CLEER is free and accessible to the public and library staff during regular library hours. We welcome visitors of all ages to explore on their own or as part of a group. Special group tours and activities can be scheduled with CLEER staff

CLEER is home to educational and research opportunities, supporting educators, students, and scientists in their efforts to study and protect the Great Lakes, as well as providing a platform to share research findings with the community, all as means to strengthen and advance Erie’s blue economy.

Reserve-a-Space

In addition to the permanent Interactive Exhibit Spaces and NOAA Science on a Sphere, CLEER hosts a Community Art Wall and a Bookshelf Wall. Both of these spaces host rotating exhibits of local interest.

The Community Art Wall, located within our Science on a Sphere room, includes 10-2’x5’ grid panels that in total provide a grid space 20 feet long by 5 feet tall for the hanging of an art exhibition.

The Bookshelf Wall, located within our Interactive Exhibit Space, is, in total, 27 feet long by 8 feet tall, divided into cubbies of varying sizes that are all 15 inches deep. Integrated within the bookshelf are two computer monitors that are used to display data, videos, or other electronic information. Some shelves are occupied by the CLEER collection of library books available for check-out. Additional books are purchased to coincide with the current exhibit.

NOAA Science On A Sphere®

NOAA’s Science On a Sphere® is a room-sized, global display system that projects visualizations onto a six-foot diameter sphere. The system provides a unique and engaging way to illustrate Earth System Science to people of all ages.

This space offers an opportunity for the public to engage in self-guided explorations, gaining insights into topics like oceanography, meteorology and geography through the stunning, spherical display. Additionally, educators and groups can schedule special presentations on any Earth or Space Science topic with CLEER staff, including 乱伦视频 faculty affiliates.

Education and Research Lab

The Education Lab of CLEER is designed to support both formal and informal educational endeavors. The lab provides the equipment and space needed for students to engage in hands-on learning experiences to understand the myriad of issues affecting Lake Erie and the Great Lakes. The lab includes:

Multiple sinks and wash stations

Wet (Research) Lab

The wet lab in CLEER provides authorized personnel a specialized facility for conducting aquatic research within a controlled laboratory environment, enabling detailed study of water quality and ecosystem dynamics. The lab also provides a direct pathway for samples collected on Presque Isle Bay and Lake Erie to be processed and stored in a timely fashion.

This lab includes:

Separate key-card entrance
Two separate integrated culture module, rack-mounted aquaria systems
One aquaria system has 10-4.75 gallon and 10-6.75 gallon tanks for a total capacity of 162 gallons
Second aquaria system has 8-4.75 gallon and 8-6.75 gallon tanks for a total capacity of 139 gallons
Each aquaria system includes continuous water quality monitoring, as well as diurnal lighting controls
Make-Up Water Storage System for continuous supply of freshwater
Floor drains

Director of Project NePTWNE

Dr. Sherri “Sam” Mason is a leading researcher in freshwater plastic pollution. Mason is responsible for propelling Project NePTWNE from its initial stages into a fully sustainable operation across all six phases of the project. She will also oversee the educational programming and operational functions of Gannon University’s Center for Lake Erie Education and Research (CLEER) and the 乱伦视频 Greenhouse, in partnership with the Regional Science Consortium (RSC).
