ABOUT THE SHOW

Synopsis: Two sisters and a dog live out their lives on the bleak English moors, dreaming of love and power. The arrival of a hapless governess and a moor-hen set all three on a strange and dangerous path. The Moors is a dark comedy about love, desperation, and visibility.

Characters:
AGATHA -  Female, Elder spinster sister. Spidery. Dangerous. Cold.
HULDEY - Female, Younger spinster sister. She has a diary. She wants to be famous.
EMILIE - Female, The governess. A romantic with a sweet face.
MARJORY - Female, The scullery maid. Down-trodden. Strategic.
THE MASTIFF - Male, The dog. He looks fierce and brutal but is a sad philosopher-king.
A MOOR-HEN - Female, A small chicken. Practical but easily frightened. 

Setting:
The bleak moors...of England?
Think WUTHERING HEIGHTS and JANE EYRE and the Bronte sisters. However: the characters all have American accents (or accents native to the country of production). Play the anachronisms. This play is about the present.

Time:
The 1840s...ish

Playwright’s Notes:
Casting is best when very diverse. The sisters do not have to be played by actors of the same ethnicity. There is NO version in which ONLY the animals are played by actors of color.

Music Note:
Huldey and Emilie must both be played by strong singers. Emilie plays a portable instrument (think lute, mandolin, ukulele, guitar, accordion, small electronic keyboard, violin, cello, etc. We are open to any instrument she can carry onstage and play while singing). Agatha must be played by someone who is comfortable singing poorly onstage. THE MOORS is not a musical, but it is a play with music.

Content Warning:
THE MOORS contains moments of brutal staged violence, disturbing imagery, and intimacy between women. Those interested are welcome to check in with Anna before auditioning if they have any concerns regarding content.

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

Auditions are open to members of the Erie community as well as GU students. Performers of any age (18 plus), body type, gender identity, ethnicity, and experience level are encouraged to audition.

Please prepare a one-minute monologue in any genre, focusing on showcasing your ability to hold duality, act the subtext, or convey meaning that isn’t explicitly stated in the text. Get as creative as you like with this.

Actors will also be asked to perform cold readings in small groups.

**Those auditioning for Emilie: Please prepare a one-minute excerpt of any folk song to sing and play on your instrument.

**Those auditioning for Huldey: Please prepare a one-minute excerpt of any song you would define as a “power ballad” that showcases big, strong vocals and stage presence. Please bring a track to sing along with.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT

Jen Silverman (they/them) is a playwright, novelist and screenwriter. Plays include: The Roommate (Broadway: The Booth Theatre; Regionally: Williamstown Theatre Festival, Actor’s Theatre of Louisville Humana Festival, Steppenwolf, South Coast Repertory Theatre, etc.); Highway Patrol (The Goodman); Spain (Second Stage Theater); Collective Rage: A Play in 5 Betties (Woolly Mammoth, MCC, Southwark Playhouse London); The Moors (Yale Repertory Theatre, The Playwrights Realm) and Witch (Writer’s Theatre, The Geffen, The Huntington). Books include: the debut novel We Play Ourselves, story collection The Island Dwellers and novel There’s Going to be Trouble from Random House. Silverman also wrote the bestselling narrative podcast The Miranda Obsession for Audible, starring Rachel Brosnahan.

Silverman is a three-time MacDowell Fellow, a member of New Dramatists and a Scholar of Note at the American Library in Paris. They write for TV and film, including Tales of the City (Netflix) and Tokyo Vice (Max). Their OSCAR® qualifying short film Troy screened at 70 festivals internationally, including the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, and is featured online in The New Yorker’s Screening Room.
