Biomedical and Mechanical Engineering

Get to know biomedical and mechanical engineering student Jessica Bernat, who recently completed a summer internship with GE Aerospace.

Tell us a little about your internship over the summer. What was your favorite part?

This summer I worked at GE Aerospace at their headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio as a process engineering intern within Marine & Industrial Assembly. Although GE's primary products are aircraft engines, aero-derivative (non-flying) forms are also produced for marine and industrial applications. In this role, I was able to contribute to the final assembly process of the LM2500 and LM6000 by means of tooling and fixture design, correction of assembly instruction, implementation of lean initiatives, improvement of material presentation and much more.

One of my favorite aspects of this internship was that not only did GE support my technical development, but they also provided me with a well-rounded experience outside of the shop floor. This included many tours of other GE facilities and other personal experiences, such as visiting the United States Airforce Museum in Dayton, Ohio. 

What are your plans after college?

After graduation in May, I will be returning to my summer team within M&I Assembly at GE Aerospace. I will be working as a process engineer within the MEDP (Manufacturing Engineering Development Program). MEDP is a 2-year rotational development program in manufacturing focused on developing technical expertise through a mix of on-the-job training and classroom education structured to provide a foundation of technical and leadership skills. 

How is Ƶ helping you prepare? 

Ƶ has obviously been an integral part of my success. Foundational engineering concepts learned in the classroom are utilized within my daily work, from technical knowledge such as structures and materials, to skills such as critical thinking and problem-solving. Other opportunities at Ƶ, such as leadership within clubs and faculty-led research, also helped boost my resume. A culmination of my time at Ƶ helped me secure two internships and then a job after graduation. 

Any advice for other students?

Make sure your professional resources are up-to-date and appealing to viewers. A recruiter at GE first contacted me about applying to their 3-day Women's Summit, which led to my internship offer. Otherwise, applying to GE wouldn't have crossed my mind as I was new to the mechanical engineering realm at the time. You never know who is viewing with what potential opportunities!
