Barb Ruscitto, speaking by phone from Italy earlier this week, said she learned the importance of serving others and volunteering as a student at Gannon University.

She has carried those values throughout her life after graduating in 1979 and they are a reason why she spent the past nearly three weeks volunteering in Milan with Team USA for the Winter Olympics.

“ÂÒÂ×ÊÓƵ helped me understand and incorporate into my life that truly life is all about giving,” Ruscitto said. “I’ve carried that with me. … This has just been a phenomenal experience.”

Ruscitto, who currently resides in Waterford, has been volunteering as part of the Team USA Welcome Experience, which is essentially the first stop for athletes when they arrive in Italy to get fitted for their Team USA gear and ensure they have what they need to compete.

“It’s an incredible experience for them and for us,” she said. “It is so much USA pride. There’s music playing and they’re getting pumped up. It’s so amazing to see them in this moment. You think ‘they’ve worked so hard, some for years and years, to reach this point. This is the pinnacle of their athletic career and how cool that I get to be part of it.’”

She said the Team USA athletes have been “nothing but appreciative, humble and grateful,” as she has interacted with them.

“One of the coolest parts of this has been … toward the end of their experience they get placed in this space with a video board. It has a video of their sport and then it plays a video of messages from home for them -- so messages from moms, dads, siblings,” she said. “Some of these athletes have been traveling for months to qualify and so it’s emotional for them.”

She also volunteered with Team USA in the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics, where she was an event services volunteer assigned to the Equestrian Center. While that experience impacted her, the experience of volunteering in Milan has been even more life-changing for her.

“It’s made me realize that we’re all more similar in this world than we are different,” she said. “Everyone comes together in unity in the spirit of sport to meet other people who are the best in the world at their sport and you just feel united. It’s quite hard to explain.”

Ruscitto graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Arts and has spent her career working in marketing. She will attend Opening Ceremony in Milan on Friday and then plans to fly back to the United States. Her work in orienting athletes will be complete by then, after all. This is a change from the 2016 Games, when she worked the equestrian venue throughout and had little chance to see anything else. This time, most of her work happened before the Games began.

“I get to then enjoy the games close up on TV and get to cheer for these athletes,” she said. “How cool is that?”
