ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ appoints inaugural chair of university’s new Department of Public Health

Gannon University is pleased to announce the appointment of Claire Watson, Ph.D., as the inaugural chair of its newly established Department of Public Health. In this role, Dr. Watson will oversee the undergraduate public health and health science majors, as well as the new Master of Public Health (MPH) and Master of Science in Health Informatics (MSHI) programs. 

Dr. Watson brings a diverse background in academia, entrepreneurship and clinical practice. Most recently, she served as the founding program director and interim dean at St. Bonaventure University, where she played a pivotal role in the creation of the DePerro School of Health Professions. In addition to her academic leadership, Dr. Watson served as the faculty athletic representative for the university’s Division I athletic teams. Her leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic earned her the NCAA Division I Faculty Athletic Representative Newcomer of the Year award in 2022, recognizing her public health work in developing safe return-to-play policies. 

Her commitment to public health extends beyond the classroom. Dr. Watson is an active volunteer with Special Olympics, where she serves as a Clinical Health Director for Health Promotion and is a founding member of the Special Olympics New York Health Advisory Board. In recognition of her contributions to improving the health of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, she received the 2023 Golisano Health Leadership Award. 

Additionally, Dr. Watson values her role as a mother to her son, Alexander, who will be entering his senior year of college. 

Dr. Watson earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Geneseo State University, her Master of Science in Exercise Science from Bloomsburg University, and  both her Master of Science in Public Health and her doctorate in public health from Walden University. Prior to her time in academia, she worked as a clinical exercise physiologist in outpatient cardiac rehabilitation,  National Coordinator for Cardiac Rehabilitation for an innovative preventive medicine and telehealth corporation, and  eventually returned to her native New York, where she started her own company that focused on creating and delivering health promotion seminars for local organizations. All of these endeavors emphasized her love of educating people about exercise, wellness and medicine which will continue to be her focus in her new role at ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ.
